Curated by Dr. Aisha Stoby, the exhibition features works by 45 pioneering artists, including Nasser Al-Yousif, who shaped the region's modernist aesthetic languages while founding key cultural institutions. The curatorial framework draws from Okwui Enwezor's critical text on institutional exclusions, positioning these artists within broader discourses on decolonization and knowledge production. This iteration builds upon the 2022 presentation at NYU Abu Dhabi, offering an expanded exploration of how artistic practices intersected with nation-building processes in the Khaleej region during the 20th century.

يتتبع معرض "إعادة رسم الحدود" ظهور الحركات الفنية الحديثة عبر البحرين والكويت وعُمان وقطر والمملكة العربية السعودية والإمارات العربية المتحدة، والتي يُشار إليها مجتمعة باسم الخليج. وبدلاً من تحديد تقدم خطي، يجمع المعرض الممارسات التي تقاطعت خلال اللحظات التكوينية لبناء الأمة، حيث أدى التوتر بين التقليد والحداثة إلى ظهور مفردات فنية متميزة. لم يكن الفنانون المختارون مؤثرين فقط في تشكيل اللغات الجمالية الحداثية، بل كانوا أيضًا محوريين في تأسيس المؤسسات الفنية وتنمية المجتمعات الثقافية في جميع أنحاء شبه الجزيرة العربية.
يستعير المعرض عنوانه من نص تأسيسي يحمل نفس الاسم للقيّم الراحل أوكوي إنويزور نُشر في العدد التأسيسي لمجلة Nka: Journal of Contemporary Africn Arts في عام 1994، حيث يستكشف الحدود التي فرضتها المؤسسات الفنية التي استبعدت الفنانين تاريخيًا من الرؤية والخطاب. يدعو المعرض، المُؤطر ضمن هذا الإطار النقدي، المشاهدين للتفاعل مع الأعمال المعروضة من خلال عدسة هذه الاستبعادات، مستحضرًا جيلاً من العلماء والفنانين الملتزمين بتحدي هياكل السلطة المهيمنة وإعادة التفكير في أنظمة إنتاج المعرفة والتربية والسياسات الثقافية.
تم تكليف وعرض نسخة سابقة من هذا المعرض في معرض جامعة نيويورك للفنون في أبوظبي في عام 2022 تحت عنوان "خليج حديث: رواد وجماعات من شبه الجزيرة العربية"

‘Redrawing the Boundaries’ traces the emergence of modern art movements across Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, collectively referred to as the Khaleej. Rather than outlining a linear progression, the exhibition assembles practices that intersected during formative moments of nation-building, where the tension between tradition and modernity gave rise to distinct artistic vocabularies. The selected artists were not only influential in shaping modernist aesthetic languages but were also central to the founding of art institutions and the cultivation of cultural communities throughout the Arabian Peninsula.
The exhibition borrows its title from an eponymous foundational text by the late curator Okwui Enwezor published in the founding issue of Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Arts in 1994, where he explores the boundaries imposed by art institutions that historically excluded artists from visibility and discourse. Positioned within this critical frame, the exhibition invites viewers to engage with the presented works through the lens of these exclusions, evoking a generation of scholars and artists committed to challenging dominant power structures and rethinking systems of knowledge production, pedagogy, and cultural politics.
An earlier iteration of this exhibition was commissioned and presented at New York University Art Gallery in Abu Dhabi in 2022 under the title ‘Khaleej Modern: Pioneers and Collectives from the Arabian Peninsula’
